They say Plastiq Phantom gets his inspiration on the bus. The mix of short and tall, old and young inside the hollow shell and the humming, lumbering rhythms of tires on asphalt supply him with plenty of material. QP, as he is also known, juxtaposes dramatic tones and continental flavor with emotive crests and falls like a bona fide classical composer. Even Aphex Twin is a fan. Indonesian gamelan chimes sweet into quiet, gun-firing rounds in "492 Cups To China" then segue into barragelike drill-bit choruses ("Kicking Mister Bubbles"). This night on the Imputor? label tour includes a set by Diagram of Suburban Chaos, who make soulful, computer-generated sex jams that leave the groove in peace - free of warble-y R&B vocalists who might mess with the mood.
