I happened to find this artist through a link on the dryft website. i came upon the diagram mp3.com page and downloaded some tracks. i was hooked right away. with all of the independent artists on mp3.com, you don't often find anything unique and worthy of much praise. maybe 6 months later, the album came out. probably the best way to describe an unknown artist is by comparison... in which case i would say that diagram sounds a lot like autechre, yet without sounding like a ripoff. his style is certainly different enough to distinguish him as a respectable artist. you could even say that there's a hint of gridlock and a dash of beefcake in there as well. diagram's style consists mainly of very glitchy, minimal electronics with gentle ambient melodies in the backdrop. some of the highly tweaked samples seem like everyday sounds... for example, i think i hear a computer keyboard in one track, some weird voices throughout, and possibly a basketball bouncing in another... but i could be wrong. at any rate, all of the sounds are woven into each composition with brilliance. on the whole, this album has a very chill, layed-back, experimental sound to it. definitely a great disc for just sitting around at night or laying in bed falling asleep. this material certainly has a dark yet gentle atmosphere to it, despite the cold electronic glitches. there's really nothing here to dance to, so just sit back and chill. i wouldn't be surprised to see diagram picked up by warp records at some point. and by the same token, i'm curious to hear more artists from imputor. this was a great find.
